STEP 1
First, find a piece of 1x8 pine board that will fit within the width of the closet door or that can be cut to fit. Our board length was 16". Next, use the drill to bore eight 3/8" holes halfway through the board at 2" intervals. Then, use the hammer and nail to make six starter holes along the bottom edge of the board halfway between the 3/8" holes. We used a scroll saw to round off the top corners of the board, but you can keep it simple for your kids by leaving the board square. Next, have your children decorate the board as they desire using latex paint and/or stencils and decals. Let their imagination run wild. Allow the board to dry completely before the next step.STEP 2
Once the board is designed, cut the dowel into eight 2" lengths and paint any desired color. After the dowels are dry, fit them snugly into the holes (glue if necessary). Screw the brass cup hooks into the starter holes along the bottom. Tighten using pliers.STEP 3
If you desire, you can add a reusable 4" x 6" picture frame to the rack. First, paint 10 popsicle sticks and allow to dry. Lay a 4" x 6" piece of paper where you want to place the frame. On four of the sticks, glue another stick (overlapping them half way), then glue these stacked sticks to the board along the top and bottom length of the paper. Glue the two remaining sticks on top of the stacked sticks to create the frame widths. The picture should slide right in.STEP 4
Attach two picture hangers to the back of the board the same distance from the center and far enough to create balance. Use the tape measure to measure the distance between the center of the one picture hanger and the other and mark those measurements on the closet door. Tap two 4d nails at those marks and hang the tie rack.MATERIALS:
